How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Ahhhh see we have a totally different winter temp than you - I actually saw 20c on the car on Christmas eve (seriously weird and abnormal though!). We had a frost the last 2 morning and nippy out there tonight but very very mild and not due to go below freezing the next couple of weeks so I'm still good to get my garlic in and I need to work out if some random things that have popped up are (pretty sure they are some of my missing leeks from last winter).

Good to hear - yes I'm thinking it is Chloe the faverolles that has laid so good to hear that is around the right colour- time will tell when the other girls start as well. Yes I do see it isn't 'white' but still so much paler (cream??) than my other layers!

So it was all just a complicated mess, I was so worried that the eggs (now porbably up to 9 days old) that I had stashed wouldn't be good to go so what I have done is left her with 8 or 9 eggs that she had under her (figure this is pretty normal in nature), took the ones from the front that she coulnd't fit (another 4) and moved her into a cleaned out safe broody coop! Fingers crossed! Sorry been a bit AWOL been off for my brothers wedding in Wales last weekend, found a cool 60s style dress - it was cold and wet so was pleased to have something I could wear thick tights with - original plan was a 40's style dress but would have had to have sheer tights and dainty shoes!:

Merry Christmas to you all - I hope you have lovely peaceful days full of love and laughter xx

I love your wedding attire with the black jacket!
Also, what is the story behind the Father Christmas bags? Sorry if you already answered this. I haven't read all the way to the end of the entries that I am behind on yet.

I believe that I have a new layer as well! Yesterday, I found a small egg laid out in the yard. I believe it is from one of the 2 gray chickens I bought (Sapphire Gems, I believe) that I bought on 4/30/18.
Today I got 5 eggs!! That's fabulous compared to the 1, 2 ,or 3 I have been getting.

How far are you from Haltern am See, NRW, Germany? (If you know). I am going to be going there in August of 2019 to visit my foreign exchange student (from 2015).

Thank you - I was so stressed I wouldn't find something and then both the dress and jacket just found me days before the wedding! I think I'll get masses of wear from the jacket too as the fur collar is removable. Just need to clean the lemon icing off the front (was being hostessy and handing around the cake as no one was getting up to go and get some and I think the sister that made it was feeling sad!).

Well I think with the Santa bags they are a spin off of a stocking really. As a kid we always had santa bags rather than stockings (maybe something to do with the lack of chimnies to hang stockings on in Australia maybe :lau). thye are good as you can fit all the FAther Christmas pressies in them (unless there is a big one which I put under the bag) and then the rest under the tree are from other people. I don't get it here - they say that all the presents are from Pere Noël which I don't like so we do our thing from more Aussie / UK traditions.

I just checked a map and apparently :
10 h 58 min (1,140 km)
via A20

Fastest route, the usual traffic
  • This route has tolls.
  • This route crosses through multiple countries.
So reeeeaaaaaalllllly long day or a 2 day drive - pretty route though!

I just looked and it is only about 2hrs 20 mins to Rotterdam where there are cheap flights to Bergerac (1/2 hour away!) - depends how much you want to come visit France - would be lovely to meet you.

That is exciting- are they the pale blue-green ones? There must be something about the passing of the solstice that is sending them all messages to start laying!

8 for the main coop 2 only from silky coop
I've forgotten Penny, how many chickens do you have in the 2 coops?

Only 2 yesterday, we'll see what today brings!

Another traditions question that has just come up on my cloth nappy forum. Do you guys in the States have 'Boxing Day' (the 26th) and if you do is it a public holiday? Yesterday was my favorite day - chilling with a book, eating leftovers, playing games - none of the stress of Christmas day itself but here in france it isn't a holiday so everyone was back at work which I find really sad. I love Boxing day and think (especially in the depths of winter) those couple of days are really important to recharge batteries.

Nope, no Boxing Day in the USA. We kicked the crown to the curb well before Boxing day started. Though I'm sure lots of people would like a second day off from work :)
:lau:lau:laufair enough! I'll pass it on - I thought that might be the case as never heard it mentioned on anything American! You poor people Boxing day is the best :gig:gig

3 today (including one from the pale new layer - although a different shape so maybe there are 2 laying now ).

So- help me, Chicken family. My Flock is composed of a variety of chickens- both hens and roosters, all different ages. They are partially for eggs and also pet enjoyment. My problem is that in the last two years my chickens have done a terrible job of producing eggs. I hatch newbies EVERY spring. I am fond of them and did not want to get rid of them, but decided recently I would just need to restart my coop worrying that perhaps a disease of some sort had found its way in from adopting new hens. I have tried all basic medications and have the coop well designed and cared for. They are spoiled with my garden and scraps. Basically all I do is feed them...and I’d get 1-2 eggs per day per 18 hens. Well, I began to give them less treats from the garden as winter is now here. Less fuss. Less attention...(still fed and watered daily) All of a sudden I am going out to find eight eggs in the coop daily. What the heck has happened? Anyone? Today, these beauties. (Pic) Why are they NOW laying after 2 years of nothing much...and in the harsh of winter!?
