10/18 + one frozen egg

Today's high was -37f (-39C). The barn cats stay in the chicken coop when temps are below -10f (-23C) and I turn on the heat lamp in the coop. Cats can have difficulty absorbing the nutrients from their food in such extreme cold. When it is this cold I crack a small egg on their food, mix it in well and add boiling water to just cover the food (which aids in digestion). Gotta keep all the animals happy and healthy in the worst that nature throws at us!

Do any of you do anything special for your animals in extreme weather (hot/cold/rainy...)?

Was taking the chickens warm water and making them warm wet feed during our cold spell..... -5 c. The chickens didn't seem to be eating much at all but loved the wet feed. Set to stay above freezing until after Christmas.now. keep warm.

True dat. People like us aren’t used to that kind of cold. We supposed to see 11 degrees Thursday night. Not good!

Negatives for us, tomorrow morning. With wind chill, it's going to be miserable...

Do any of you do anything special for your animals in extreme weather (hot/cold/rainy...)?

The cat will stay inside tonight, but other than that, everybody can take care of themselves pretty well. I did have a heat lamp going for a severely molting hen a few weeks ago, thankfully she's fully feathered now.

I got TWO eggs today!!!! One brown and one green. Miss EE now has a good role model, and hopefully she'll get the message. I stuck her up to the other hen, who was in a box, and told her that that was what she was supposed to do. We'll see if she gets it.

Happy winter solstice! I am predicting brighter days in the next 6 months for those of us living in the northern hemisphere. Here sunrise was at 11:12am and sunset at 4:46pm.

13/18 + a frozen EE egg laid in a pile of poop below the perch.

I was getting sick of this cold weather, then checked the forecast for my friend's farm 1500mi SE of here. They are expecting a low of -44f (-42C) tonight. Now our -35f (-37C) doesn't seem quite as cold. Maybe almost even T-shirt weather??? Lol

Do any of you do anything special for your poultry for Christmas? Last year I gave my chickens a red cabbage to peck away at. They thanked me by covering the coop in forest green manure. Lol.
