How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Yesterday I replaced the old beer box nest boxes with a new, large communal nest box. Five of the hens liked the box and laid eggs there. One hen decided it would be best to lay her egg on the floor of the coop. So, 6 eggs for today.

Those are some nice looking eggs. And I like your communal nest box, looks like your gals like it also (except for the one 😊).

I think the one that laid in the coop is at the bottom of the pecking order and shies away from the other hens. Yesterday evening I checked on the girls and all were on the roosting bars except her. She was sitting on the floor of the coop, right around where that egg was laid.

For some reason, our girls are laying LESS now that the days are getting longer. Out of 24 laying hens, we only collected 12 eggs yesterday. We were getting 22 a day. Then, a pullet died from an enlarged heart. All the chickens decided to stop sleeping in that coop and moved to the other. Then, the eggs went bye bye.

David said it's because that coop doesn't get as much light but I would think the longer days would negate that

We have 1 chicken free ranging in our backyard that escaped from our neighbors coop. Over the last 2 weeks she hasn’t been around except to pop in and eat the food I leave for her and fresh water. Now I have been worried since I haven’t seen for 2 days. My husband discovered her hidden under a bush next to our house and she was sitting on 21 eggs!! Yes, 21 eggs…not a typo! My first post on this forum. My girl is a champ!!

That's a lot of eggs! If she's been missing for 2 week, you probably have about 1 week to go before she hatches some of those eggs.

I assume it's your neighbors girl? It was she abandoned? And is there a rooster near?
