I think they can tell because of the ceramic egg's temperature. All the freshly laid eggs are warm, and the fake one is cold.

6 eggs (so far) today. Might get a 7th.

I picked up a box of produce scraps from the grocery store yesterday. There were several big handfuls of lettuce leaves and each chicken got 1/4 of a watermelon, probably around 2 pounds for each bird. All of it was eaten within a few hours. They got a good boost of micronutrients and electrolytes from the store's garbage. LOL

ETA: just picked up another box of nutrition for the ladies.
