How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

It is staggeringing what ginormous eggs birds lay in relation to their body size. Human eggs are the size of a period at the end of a sentence on a page of print ....

A whale's ovum is about 100 microns, or about twice the diameter of a human hair.

And to think that a chicken egg is a single cell. Amazing.

@thistlewick what a lovely set up! But you are obviously short about 20 chickens, :lau it is not crowded enough or poopy enough! What pretty birds, too, what are they?
thank you! I have 18 little nutballs, 17 pullets and 1 Cockerel, they won't be 1 until May

But the square footage of the shed is only actually 10x16 so 160 feet, which (if I kept them in there ALL the time, which I do not) is already overcrowded!

Though, I am hearing that the poopboards, since they can be flown up to and walked on, is considered additional square footage, and mine are huge, 16x3 so that's an additional 48. They have 32 foot of roosting space, and they definitely do not need all of that, they cluster down at one end and the lower pecking order girls are all alone in the middle :(

So 18 is good! IF I kept them in there all the time which I don't - though tbf I have overnight once or twice when needs must. They seem perfectly fine.

We are building a run, it will be 8x16 - so an additional 128 so a grand total of 336 square feet with 32 feet of roosting space, which tells me that with this set up I *could* get away with probably up to 40 chickens MAXIMUM but I don't want that!!

I want to know all their names and personalities and have them all be friendly and not wild 😍

In the photo, Pepper is Silver Laced Wyandotte, Toffee is a bym from Hoover's a "Starlight Olive Egger" and so is Chocolate. Harriet is a Cream Legbar sans Crest, her sis Penelope has a perfect one. and Jane, whose tail is just peeping out of that middle box, is a Jersey Giant.

I am really kinda hoping another lady goes broody though, so we can see if it's successful and we get a few more :) We have a gorgeous Easter Egger Cockerel and I want to see how they cross with my Copper Marans for more Olive Eggs :D

12 eggs yesterday! 7 dozen last week :O

shed is only actually 10x16 so 160 feet,
160 ÷ 4 = 40, so officially you have room in the coop for 40 birds. I never heard of adding poopboard footage to the sq footage though. And the run space is calculated separately, I've always heard one needs a MINIMUM of 10 sq ft per bird in the run plus lots of clutter and multiple feeders and waterers, out of sight from each other.

My count today may be skewed. GC gathered eggs and did not look under one of the broodies. She got 9 eggs. I went out there this morning and found six more under her, but how many were yesterday's and how many were laid this morning is anybody's guess. Today's count may be inaccurate as well. 🤷‍♀️

3 eggs yesterday.

I have 6 laying hens, only 4 are actually laying. The rest is not included in this count are just there for their prettiness. 😄

I found out yesterday that my biggest hen, Apple, is not only the bully, she is also doing the rooster thing with the 2 hens she is house with and 1 hen is looking bad with the feather mating damage.

Yesterday I separated them once I found out. I am letting Apple in the general garden all by herself now, she still sleep in the coop with the rest. Apple is the roost of my flock problem.

I have to think hard to find a permanent solution for Apple in my flock. We are her 3rd home, so she is here to stay, but I must find a way. What a chicken drama! 😄
