Yesterday we got 23 from our 29 GC's!!! The temps are going back into the low 30's for the daytime and last night we had 10 F here in Iredell County, NC. It's going to be a cold week coming up. This morning when I let the Gals out there were 7 eggs in the laying boxes already.

What breed hens would those be? Don't know for sure, but 50% or so isn't unheard of for some breeds their first year. I give mine around 14 hours of light and get from 60-100% from them, but they are all first year layers. Last year my old hens were on their second winter and even with the light I was lucky to get 50%.
This is their first winter. In order of best layers.
1 white leghorn
1 red sexlink
1 RIR
2 EE or americaunas (not sure what they are)
1 buff orpington
1 barred rock

I don't use heat but give 12 hours of light; energy saver on timer from 5:30 am to 8 am then 3:30 pm to 5:30. I've excellent layer breeds with worst layer being Barred Rock. Get at worst 5 eggs in a day from 7 girls.
5 so far today and this week has been their best- 44 eggs from 7 girls. Likely to get another today too
I have to say that my Barred Rock is probably my worst layer too. Do you have any problems with frostbite with the leghorns longer combs? My white leghorn is my best layer. One a day since the day she started laying.
