This topic won't seem to let me start a new thread. My question is - how long does it actually take for a chicken to lay? I have one that sits on the nest for a long time. Should I be concerned? I lost one recently to what I think may have been egg binding. They are 2-3 year old Australorps. I get 2/3 or 3/3 most days.

My BR takes forever!! She sits, gets up , sets again, for like a hour.. She sings the whole time... My BO is in and out in 10 min or so...

One of our RIR usually takes a very long time too. Except today when she realized the girls in the run were getting bread as a treat. One big squawk and out she came running to get her share (which being the queen of the flock means a good sized portion). A record laying time for her of about 8 minutes flat!

4 Chicken egg's yesterday

6 Chicken egg's today

Temp today was 110 F degrees by 9:30 AM

I believe the crows are raiding me again ......

This is a picture of my fake egg's I put in the nest and something took it and that is a led bar with a long screw and the egg is full of Gorilla Glue so the two picas are stuck together really good .....

The accused ......

4 eggs out of 8 hens, however 1 of the eggs was "laid" from the roost & was a thin shell egg. It was completely smashed on the coop floor & it didn't look like anyone had started eating it yet.
My next set of chickens turned 20 weeks old today, so hopefully they will start laying in the next few weeks.
