How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

2/4, but these 2 haven't paid an egg in weeks and weeks since another flock member passed and the pecking order had to re-situate. Yay! So glad. I was getting worried. We took down the tarp on the side of their run that was acting as a wind break in the winter weather. They'll get quite a lot more light now. I've been gotten 4/4. Still waiting for that to happen.

15/17 today. Heard a huge commotion in the chicken yard today and when I went out to check, there was a Cooper's Hawk sitting on the roof of the coop staring at the flock. The hens were all balled up around a pear tree out in the yard with the two roos standing guard on the perimeter. We have Cooper's and 3 other species of hawks around but this is the first time I have ever seen one around the chickens with obvious intent. I know they can be deadly so I'll have to be watchful. I might put some extra cover in the yard for a quick escape.

bird netting 50 x 50 from amazon we have not had loss of bird as yet from anything
but darn that was too close for comfort .....
We had even dozen today 2 banty from main coop 0 from Silky Land they are all broody now

Not only do they carton the eggs, they untie my shoes to get attention . Given time, they will undo a double knot. I just hope there are no practical jokers in the flock waiting to tie the laces together and watch me do a Chevy Chase pratfall. The Wellies are sneaky and really good at it, Sussex are not as subtle but learning!
12/17 again yesterday.

Don’t tell me you got your Wellies from Meyers? My welsumer does the same thing if I don’t pet them.

I got them from Whitmore Farm in MD. I love the Welsummers, beautiful with great personalities, smart, crafty foragers and nice eggs. Got a lot of snap for a chicken! The Ameraucanas and Marans are fun too. My Blue Ameraucanas are cute as a button but a bit flighty and the BC Marans are a bit slow and erratic layers. If I had to keep only one breed, the Wellies at at the top of my list.

Note: as pointed out in a subsequent post, Whitmore Farm sold their poultry operation to neighboring Deer Run Farm (http://www.deerrunfarmmd.com) last June.
