How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

5/17 today. Well. Technically 6 but the last one was shell-less and it was the same EE that laid this morning. So she laid twice but the 2nd was shell-less. I’m assuming normal since she’s brand new to laying? Here’s a pic for fun.

It happens even with older hens. You can find where someone states a hen releases an egg every 24 hours but the "factory" isn't that well regulated. Mine that lay several to many days in a row usually lay later each day until they take a day off. And yes every now and then 2 in one day. Someone at the front of the line wasn't paying attention to their watch and kicked the next egg out way too soon.

3 today - finally one from the silkie who has been moved into the new coop with the big girls while her mate is broody (she took maybe 3 or 4 days off), one normal one and another double yoker (the 2nd I've had from my young pullets since they started laying a week ago). Yesterday was 3 eggs for the first time from the big girls so I'm now sure they are all laying (21 and 23 weeks) - I am a bit sad as they all look almost identical in both size and colour (a pale pinky brown colour) - I was hoping for different shades that was why I got 3 different breeds (must admit didn't look too hard at egg colour as it is also for pretty in the garden)!!!

Other than the 2 double yokers they are pretty small (not much bigger than the silkies (40gm)) at about 50gm each. I read some where that they get bigger as they get older. Is this right and when does that happen?

It gets bigger after a month or 2 and settle to that size for couple of years. It gets bigger yet when they get older but few in between.

Thanks @PouleChick, wife’s getting better, she better be with 3 kids to take care of and one handicap, with my job 50++ hours. I can only help her so much lol, not complaining I do the laundry and cook when I come home but I also travel a lot work wise, life throws curve ball to make us better I guess. Now I just need to look for another car that I can’t afford since insurance paid only so much.

Yep, they get bigger as the girls get older. My oldest EE started at high 50 grams progressing through the lower 60's her first full year of laying. After her first winter off (at 1.5 years of age she started back up in the high 60s and low 70s. She is still laying in that range 4 years later. My Anconas started in the higher 40s, low 50s. Finally settled on 60g +/- 2g consistently. Other birds followed a similar pattern.

I'm just constantly fascinated by these chickens - that is so interesting - I will start taking more records of weights etc but great to know thank you!

I'm a bit of a data junkie. I track the age each girl lays her first egg and every egg thereafter. Largest, smallest, average, % of days she lays since her first.

Side benefits of this "habit"

• I can see which ones go broody (like I don't know ) and for how long.
• How long between their fall moult and when they start back up again.
• And how many eggs have been laid since I got my first girls in June 2012. I would guess "quite a lot" but I wouldn't have guessed "well over 8,000".
• Answer questions like "When does an EE start to lay". I can say "depends on the girl but the one's I've had started between xx and xx".
