How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that Spartan, that must be so sad.

So I had to go and look this up and this is what Wikipedia told me:
Though the original Marans could also be feather-legged birds, British breeders preferred the clean-legged version, and thus feather-legged Marans are now mainly found in France and the United States. The Australian Poultry Standard recognises both feather- and clean-legged.[4] The American Poultry Association only recognises feather-legged.
So far I've only seen the clean legged ones here and that is what I've got!

Thanks Poulechick!
Yep on feathered legged FBCM, That’s when I know we have the authentic chickens since I paid $24 per chicks from a reputable breeder and I saw in some store they’re selling “Black Marans” for $5/chick but they’re clean legged and lack the Copper on the hackle when matures.

For the mean time I have 22 beautiful Black Copper Marans and Pendesenca chicks in the brooder all doing great on their first week and 7 eggs in the Brinsea Mini II to hatch in over a week, what have I’ve done? I’ve turned into hatching addict LOL.
:gigthat is an awful lot of chicks. Have you got space for them all?

3/3 again this morning - I am so impressed with my Silkies after expecting such low levels of eggs I think I'm getting 5 or 6 a week from her!

We had 8 today! That is the most we have ever gotten at once. My husband is more curious than I am to know which girls are laying and as he puts it which girls are being “slackers”. I know which girls laid 3 of them but the other 5 are a mystery. I will figure it out eventually.

I just wish our Gold Sexlink would regulate and not lay such HUGE eggs all with double or triple yolks. I like her personality so I don’t want her to have a short lifespan because of these crazy big eggs.

How old is she? My Matilda (Harco - a type of hybrid layer) was also giving me lots and lots of doubles to start with but now (8 months old) she hasn't laid a double in ages!

18 Eggs Today, and a beautiful breezy 70s day that my chickens love.

We have a big property but I want to limit their access to certain area, also didn’t want to crowd the 2 big coops so I might retire 10 of my 4 yr old layers by September since from the very beginning we only wanted 3 layers but so many beautiful chicken and egg colors and the accidental roo as well as 8 hens first time broodies, we keep on exponentially multiplying.

Check which of those 4 year olds are still laying well before you move them out. I have an EE that is 6 and laying 2-3 a week (down from her prime) which is better than some of the younger girls I have.

Good thinking Bruce, considering the older lays extra large eggs, maybe I should try those food color technique on their vents before I send them to retirement home. Some almost became pets also since they are so nice and act like puppies, so would be hard. Last year sending 5 yr old layers to freezer camp was hard.

She is around 5 months old. She was the first to start laying too.
Mine was the first to lay too! My other hybrid has different issues - she spits out the odd soft shelled egg often followed by a thin shell sometimes the same day. I hope she settles and does'nt end up causing me problems!

So tough - don't have to do that yet thank goodness! How touhg is a 5 year old hen to eat?
