How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Came home tonight. Bad scene.

One of the hens looks like she’s going to die any minute. She’s limp as a rag. She’s the one that was on the floor last night. Again tonight too. When I picked her up she just hung in my hands. I put her in a cage and brought her up to the house. She roused enough to eat a few mealworms and take a drop of water. Nothing more I can do tonight. Tomorrow morning will be fun.

Also got 10 eggs again. Sitter left them in the shed. 2 have holes in them, 1 thru the membrane. No idea what the story is - have to talk to the sitter in the morning.

Well at least the visit with our daughter went well!

Hopefully she makes it through the night.

Oh I hope not @Sequel! Having 1/3 of your layers going broody is good only if she is hatching eggs.

4 today. Hot (like everywhere else it seems)
Since I have no rooster, yeah she doesn't need to go broody! It's only mid 70's here so heat isn't really a factor. She and her sister Squirrel are 2 years old now and spent last summer taking turns being broody. There could be something else going on, she isn't eating a big dinner like the others right before roosting. Still devours breakfast though, I just don't know.

Taking the eggs won’t stop a hen from going or being broody. You need to keep her off the nest for a few days - 3 seems to work most often.

Have a great trip!
Thanks!!
Yep, eggs or no eggs a broody will clamp down on their nest until their hormones are satisfied. That usually means the eggs hatch and the littles start peeping. No peeping, not getting off the nest. Thus the broody buster cage though in this heat I expect it would take a LONG time.

I figure it will be easier to just let her sit on some eggs while I am gone. She will be halfway finished when I get back home! I just don't want her to hatch them while I am gone!
I currently have 14 or 15 chicks but I will be taking 4 of them to my son in August, plus I don't know how many are cockerels yet. So getting a few more chicks will be okay.

Only 8 eggs today but it was another ridiculously hot day. I think we have heat advisories through the weekend.

The heat sure has been awful here too.

I got 12 yesterday out of 25 birds of laying age.
One of the new birds has laid 2 eggs! They are beautiful and green.

First egg from her next to an Australorp egg.
The lighting is awful. It is more bright green in person. :p

The 10 eggs from yesterday left in the shed by the sitter may be really 13 as I found 3 eggs in the nest box first thing this morning. 13 makes more sense.

Sicilia made it thru the night! She ate and drank a bit on her own. I have her some vitamins. Her comb is all droopy so she’s definitely not 100%. I have her separated into a large coop still within the larger run. The other hens have visited her several times already which I take as a good sign. Going to give everyone a health check today.

I want to strangle the sitter. She’s a neighbor and I’m lucky to have her but she’s too focused on getting in and out in in nanoseconds to really pay attention to what needs to be done. Grr. I’m reaching out to another neighbor to see if there’s an opportunity there.
