How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I’m jealous of the canning and apples. Tomatoes are all I get at a price that makes sense. I will be making the family hot ketchup recipe (I use it in meatloaf primarily) very soon as I’m almost out.

16 eggs out of 17 hens yesterday!! One brown egg slacker - lol . Did have a soft brown egg this morning according to hubby. I didn’t see it. I was so hoping the soft egg days were behind me. Guess not. Rey has totally eaten all the egg shells I had put out before I left. I really-upped it yesterday. There was plenty of oyster shell still left.

I had to grocery shop yesterday as well as a dentist appt. tt market I go to for our meats had small discount trays of old veggies. First time I ever saw that. I got several trays of mostly cukes. A few apples, a peach and other odds and ends. I also talked the produce manager into giving me a small bin of veggie trimmings he had from the displayed veggies. Mostly lettuce leaves. First time I’ve ever asked for trimmings from a store! Hens enjoyed the treat when I got home. I’m parcelling the bounty out over the next few days. If it goes bad too quick I’ll bury it in the compost pile. I hung a cuke and an apple as a piñata both yesterday and today after they had their regular fermented feed.

I stole the idea from a blog that talked about feeding chickens 100% from compost. Big farm operation. He gets veggie scraps/garbage from an organic restaurant. I don’t have either the access or the need for so much but the idea stuck. I decided before I left on vacation that I’d try to figure something out when I got back and there was the opportunity right away! I’ll say the manager didn’t seem too happy for some odd reason but wasn’t too resistant either. And that’s just one person at one store. I’ll
Ask again somewhere else and maybe find a happy manager. It certainly was worth asking nicely for the scraps!!

Some of that is just flock dynamics, I've got some "higher up" girls that have a favorite nest and if someone else is in it when they want to lay, they will force them out.
They kick hens out and then walk away, sometimes for 10-15 minutes. And they’ll clear out ALL the boxes. I’ve even seen one kick out hens after she laid. But it seems to have calmed down. Maybe the time the leghorns were separated out played a part. I get the pecking order thing and if it’s not vicious then I leave it alone. Which is where I am now. I hope it stays this way as it’s sure easier for me to not have 2 operating coops.

15 eggs today which included the soft egg from this morning an another egg that cracked when laid/dropped on top of eggs already in the box. It was a leghorn egg. Funny enough all 4 leghorns laid in the same box.

A local produce stand had Missouri Grown Gala apples for 69 cents a pound!! I paid a lot more than that when I went to the orchard and picked my own. These aren't as large as the pick your own ones were, but still real good looking apples. I bought 7 pounds. Still haven't been able to make the time to do anything with them yet.
I did get the 3 mums planted today. Also found some hotter peppers at a pricier grocery store than what I shop at!

The school I used to work at used to give me the leftovers from the cafeteria for several years. I had to cut it back to just veggies because the girls' egg laying fell off. Then the cafeteria manager passed away very quickly from cancer and I never asked the new cafeteria manager if she would continue to do the same.

15 eggs today.
