3 eggs today! The EE finally laid! Lovely green. Or maybe greenish blue...

They kick hens out and then walk away, sometimes for 10-15 minutes. And they’ll clear out ALL the boxes.

Well that is just downright rude!!! They are asserting their dominance. My 2 Anconas were like that. Unquestioned, never challenged, top of the flock but they felt the need to reinforce their position by mounting the other girls with frequency. Zia died from a couple of strokes (I think) 2 years ago and Yue settled some. Now she is clearly in the twilight of her life and while she runs with the others she is no longer dominant.

I have one home grown blue my first hatch that lived she is tops here then a few barred rock that asserted themselves

11 yesterday.

My egg count drops too as I give more access to grass, compost, fruits & veggies, etc. I don’t really consider these treats as I believe in polycultural eating for me and the chickens. Only giving commercial feed may max egg production but doesn’t give the highest quality of life IMO. It’s a trade off I’m willing to make. And they are so darn happy scratching away at stuff vs eating out of a tube all day, every day. It makes ME happy to see them happy.

I like the school cafeteria idea! I have an elementary and middle school a couple of miles away. I may give them a try for lunch veggie leftovers.

I bought some jonamac apples at Walmart yesterday. I understand they’ve been around a long time but are new to me. Jonagold are my favs but I can’t seem to find them anymore. $.98/lb which was the cheapest apple there also. They also had ginger gold which I also had never heard of.

Cool front came in so it’s really windy but blessedly much cooler than earlier this week. Gives us South Florida peeps hope for fall coming!

I got 3 today, leghorn, welsummer and a faverolles. This morning they were yelling at each other because they all wanted the same nest. I popped the faverolles (Squirrel)into another nest and she stayed there.

Started to read the thread at 8:30. Then thought "I don't know, I forgot to bring the eggs in when I closed up the coop". Then I thought "OOPS! Forgot to go close up after dinner!"
