Mine?

I have 6 pullets and 22 birds over 3 years old with some of those over 6.....even 2 that are 10+.

:th
Yep, yours! When were the pullets hatched? I generally don't expect anything from my older girls until mid Feb at the earliest though I have had a few surprise me with a run of a few days before then. Two 10+ year old chickens! That is impressive. I have 3 that are 7.5 years.

My pullets are from May and June I think. All 6 are laying except they take days off here and there. Of the pullets 2 are Salmon Faverolle, 2 are Starlight green layers and 2 are Prairie Bluebells. The Starlights are my most reliable.

There are 3 older Australorp laying sporadically.

My old ladies are both bantam cochins. Sweet little birds.

My next oldest is a dark Brahma at 7 years now.

Many of my 4+ year old Australorp are more broody than not. They will be cycled out this year. It is ridiculous having 6-8 broody all summer long every year then not laying all winter.

That is interesting, of the 4 BA's I've had only 1 has gone broody. I had her raise 2 of the batches from Meyer.

Where do you get your chicks? I've not heard of Starlight Green Layers or Prairie Bluebells. My 2 Salmon favs (from Ideal) were never good layers, SOMETIMES managed to squeak into the USDA Medium size and are broody several times a year. One died a couple of years ago, the other is 7.5 years old.

I TRIED to give her day old chicks this year but she wasn't having it so they went under the big BA who was also broody at the time. But soon as the Fav was broken, she started hanging out with Zorra and the chicks, same as she did in 2015. And same as before, she stuck with the chicks for at least a month after Zorra kicked them to the curb.

I got my one green egg today but was missing a chicken when I went into the run. Hmmm.....turns out Blondie, one of the Faverolles was sitting in a nest box!!!! Woo Hoo! She didn't actually produce an egg but her heart is in the right place. None of the Faverolles I've had have ever started laying before late February so this looks good. She did molt early though in mid summer and hasn't laid since then so it's time I'd say.

These broody Australorp are from Strombergs hatchery. It really shocked me as none of my prior Australorp have been broody butts.
The Starlight green and Prairie Blue bell are a Hoovers creation.
They added Leghorns blood into the mix for better production.....I have no idea what else is in there. So far they are not super twitchy birds. Both of my green layers are single combed and red in color. The blue layers have pea combs one is white and red the other is a dark chocolate color. All have yellow legs and are built a lot like leghorns. I am pretty sure my white bird is a dud. I have yet to get 2 blue eggs in one day. She is still young and no signs of issues so I am giving her more time. I know the other is laying for sure because I have caught her in the act.

I had horrible luck with all the EE's I have tried. :( Everything from deformities to no shells ever and one that laid all double yolkers dying at 8 months from egg binding. Poor girl had split wing and cross beak too.

So far I like the Hoover's birds.

My Favs are definitely not good layers but they are still cute and ridiculously overreactive to everything. I find them entertaining.

Hi guys! I've had computer problems for a few days. I couldn't get the cursor to show up.:barnie:he Turns out that the touch pad had some how gotten locked. I just now figured out how to unlock it!! :wee
I had 19 eggs for Friday and Saturday ( I think I have already reported that). Yesterday we got 9 eggs and today we got 8 eggs.
Christmas we are supposed to get a high of 69 degrees!! Unbelievable.:th
Had the 6 year old grandson over all day. Had him help me let the chickens out, collect a couple of early eggs and then had him help me scramble them for breakfast!
When he finally went home ( late afternoon) he was saying he "wished he could have chickens at his house!" :love His parents would never go for that.:lau
