Yeah but WHY?? And where did they take the wooden one and why did they bring it back? I couldn't even find it in the shavings on the coop floor. I have to guess that it had somehow been in the community box the whole time and I just missed it. Not sure how the girls turned it back up though.

Also I ventilated the laying box it was in & the coop at the same time!!!

We all know that ventilation is important in chicken coops

Finally have max production! 3 eggs out of 3 hens!

7 eggs. Five white ones, which is 100% production from my Brown Leghorns... and only 2 from my 9 EEs! They'll get to work soon, but zero today from the three 3-yo BOs (sometimes I get one) and the pretty little girl that may be part Sebright or GLW (I can't tell which!) is just lawn deco.

I wish mine would learn to write. I do have a variety of breeds so I have a chance to know who laid what but I still have to catch them in the act and determine a difference between the eggs of girls that are the same breed.

One of the benefits of having such a small flock, I guess. I could have the OE and EE mixed up (obviously not the actual eggs, since those are obvious), and figuring out my Buff Orpingtons could be difficult.

My first three hens started laying 2 weeks apart from each other, so they were easy, but I had three lay their first eggs today.

I finally figured out how to tell my 2 EE pullets apart. Both are black and white. First, I've never had a black and white EE before and second, I've never had two that I couldn't easily tell apart by coloring even if they were all still alive. These girls are nearly twins but I noticed one has a wider comb than the other. Now, if I could only find a difference in the 2 Columbian Wyandottes. 3 of those 4 birds do have "anklets" so I can tell who is who IF I can see their right leg.

Well, I got at least 4 eggs today from 8 hens. The other coop with 21 hens in it, can't get in to collect eggs because the door is frozen shut! I was only able to open the pop door on that coop today. Hopefully we will be able to get the man door open tomorrow because I can see through the window and see that the feeder is basically empty ( and the food is inside the coop in a metal trash can with a lid!).

I had one swallow and try to digest one. It died. I cut the egg out, washed it & back into the nest it went!

Unfortunately, I had already relocated my snake to the woods and released it before I went home to finish collecting eggs and noticed that one of the ceramic eggs was missing! I thought the lump in it was from a real egg. I don't kill our black snakes as they are good rodent control and don't get into the nest boxes very often.
