How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

11/18 real eggs + 1 fairy egg

So after 2 weeks of my 5 year old egg collector telling me stories of the cockerel Copper pecking at him (in his parka), yesterday my hubby went out with him. They came in saying that Copper was full on attacking both of them. Today I watched my hubby try to collect eggs from afar. Sure enough, Copper hopped on-top of the nesting boxes and hubby only got 2 eggs before being chased away. He handed me the basket, I walked in and Copper jumped down off the nesting boxes and left me to collect the eggs undisturbed.

I am very torn over the matter. Copper is by far our favorite cockerel. He is the best looking and has extraordinarily keen predatory senses. He quickly calls the alarm when large birds fly overhead and let's the flock know when the coast is clear. We need a protective roo in the flock. We live in the remote northern wilderness, and there are lots of large predators. A bear tore the siding off the coop before the previous home owners installed an electric fence. They had a fox in the coop after that which would have killed their entire flock if they didn't have a couple protective roos. A neighbour lost 66/120 hens last spring from a fox who found a way past their electric fence. I went outside last winter and found a fox in the run. My hens were fleeing in all directions while my old roo hid in the top corner of the coop. Useless at protecting his hens. They only survived by luck that I went outside when I did. I NEED a good protective rooster, and that is Copper, but I hate that he has recently taken to attacking anyone but me! Grrrr!

If you want a 5 year old egg collecter then he has to go. If 5 year old is happy to watch from a outside the run and they will not be in the same space ever then he can stay. Personally I would start asking around if anyone has a spare good rooster. We are lucky enough not to need a rooster but we had 9 cockerals from our 14 eggs and they could be quite scary not full grown. Had to keep my 5 year old away until I got rid of them. Good luck.
