I got one of those light colored eggs today. It was the one that was cracked and ended up buried under a tomato plant. I wonder what causes them to be light sometimes?

6 eggs out of 8 girls the 2 previous days, 7 out of 8 yesterday. We've been getting 5 to 7 daily for weeks now, so quite a bounty. (They just reached full "hen-hood" this spring, all very young chickens.)

I recognize which egg belongs to which hen for the most part (easy with the 2 Eggers and Whiting's True Blue, but most of the browns have distinctive shades or shapes). Suspected for quite awhile that one girl has not been laying for weeks now, including her behavior (no longer squatting for me, being very flighty and definitely more of a bully to the lower-ranking girls), and confirmed when I managed to catch her yesterday and do vent inspection -- sure enough, dry and tight when all the others are obviously actively laying. Sheila the Black Orp -- you are ON MY WATCH LIST, girl! She's beautiful and healthy, vigorous...but not laying. Freeloader!
