If you know the Comets are giving soft eggs, can you give them whole calcium tablets in their beaks? When you dissolve them like that, they can't get the whole dose unless they eat the entire mash you dissolve them in. Just take them off the roost at night when they are calm and easy to catch, pull down on their wattles to open their beak, and pop the tablet in. They can swallow it easily although it looks big. They can swallow a whole mouse! Do this every night for a week and your problem should be solved.

I put my order in for 7 Dominique pullets, 7 black Ameraucana pullets and 1 black Ameraucana cockerel from Cackle Hatchery, because they have REAL Ameraucana chicks, not EEs with fake Ameraucana-sounding names, and bc Doms are sexable at hatch and have rose combs not very subject to frostbite. And I do like Doms and have always wanted Ams even though they are so pricey! And 15 is the least you can order without having to pay $20 for a "small-order" fee, although in theory you can order as few as 3 chicks if that's all you want. I won't get them till July 7 and they probably won't start laying until March of 2026, at which time I'll be needing to cull some of my OG hens anyway. I'se excited! I'm "eggspecting" again, lol!

How exciting! 6 Dominiques is going to be fun, my two have lots of personality!

If you ever want a smaller order of those breeds, I’ve gotten a legitimate Ameraucana and Dominiques from Meyer Hatchery with no fee for a small order (just 3 minimum chicks). My Ameraucana unfortunately was a failure to thrive, but she had the proper leg coloring, not green like an EE.

I did that for a week with both hens and it didn’t get better. My coop is a rather small starter coop, so getting them out isnt always easy. And they both fought me and spit the tablets out multiple times. I resorted to the mash just to make it easier on everybody. I distract the Bantams with some dry layer pellets and the GC girls go to town on the mash.

My Speckled Sussex is still broody. I pick her up off the nest and throw her over the fence to join the rest of the flock and get some afternoon treat (scratch, BOSS, and dried mealworms). I may have to set up a broody jail for her...
