How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

3 eggs yesterday

Today is first day breaking broody hen. She has been broody for about 2 weeks now, I noticed yesterday she was very thin, her eggs are not fertile eggs, I let her broody to give her body a break from egg laying. She is so thin so today I removed all her eggs, nestbox materials, just bare floor. Poor girl, she looked at it and wonder..what is happening? I will let her out in the garden until she is out of broodiness. She goes broody after laying around 10 eggs.

I have to take my broodies off the nest twice a day to eat, drink and poop, I have given up trying to break them. They never do.

A few times I have given chicks to stop them - once my really old hen went broody in the heat of summer for 6 weeks, I gave her 4 chicks and she was out and about 2 days later with her new family.

This year I won’t have chicks, so hopefully no one will be broody.

It is very hard to break broody hen, some are just very determined.

I would love to have chicks, but I can not add anymore because this is all that I can manage.

This broody hen - Agent J is a Japanese bantam, she had a baby chick to care for last year and she is super great mommy. She cared for her baby to 9 weeks old and still watch out for her pullet chick.

I don't know if this is the case or not, but I notice I give them extra protein food like sardine they got back to laying egg quicker. Might be this is my imagination.

Bantams usually make great mamas ♥️
