I think five I lost count because the children help me gather eggs

There is definitely such a thing as "too much assistance" but enjoy it while you have it. I sorely miss those days when my "not-so-little-anymores" would tag along "helping" me with the chores.

Did it take much longer and often require returning to "fix" things?
Of course it did.

Would I go back to those days to do it all again the exact same way?
In a heartbeat!

It is so sweet watching them with the chickens! They love working with them! I hope they always will!!

Got 4 but I think someone laid in the pump house and it got ate by a mouse or rat. I also believe that they are back to laying under the back porch and the duck is laying in the mud puddles in the back yard

Anyone else excited about the winter solstice being here and gone as of yesterday? Soon enough we'll be getting more daylight hours and egg production will pick up.

11 today out of 44 hens/pullets, mostly brown/cream eggs which feels weird considering I have more colored layers than non colored layers. I think my handful of late summer broody-raised pullets will carry me through the winter with fresh eggs. A few of my older pullets are also doing well with the egg laying, my buckeye, leghorn, and sapphire sky being the most consistent. I'm starting to get a little antsy, waiting for spring to come around so I can get back to raising chicks and managing my flock (which are doing great this winter so far).

Seven eggs today!
I haven't posted here in ages bc I've only been getting one, two, or at most three eggs a day. I've been giving supplemental light for about 3 weeks now, since everyone mostly finished molting, and it appears they're starting to pick up production, so hooray! So far I'm getting two that appear to be pullet eggs, they're small ... but one of those is quite dark, as if it's from my Blue Copper Marans. She's at least two years old, maybe 3 ...
Do older hens sometimes start out the laying season laying small eggs like this? The only pullets I have are BA (medium brown eggs) and black Ameraucanas (blue eggs),.so ... I guess it has to be hers. But it seems odd she would lay such a small one. Ideas, anyone?
