Wow, what a gorgeous chocolate color!

Thanks - I am quite surprised, I was quite skeptical about the claims of dark eggs like Marans. These are developed by Hendrix Genetics, I think in France they may be called something else, here they are known as Noirans (a nod to french noir for black is my guess).

Quiet girls, they don’t get up to any trouble, and they have lovely feathered feet and legs.

Pretty small for Août! I’m honestly glad, because she can make some massive eggs that must be a pain to lay. This one must have been easy!

I love the speckles on that darker egg - so pretty! How can you eat it?

I haven't been out there to check for eggs today because seriously the rain could decide to stop some time before it's too dark to check.

Here in the US they are called Marans.

Oh we have Marans here also - all the usual varieties BCM, Wheatan, Cuckoo, etc, both the NA clean legged and the European feathered leg.

These Noirans are a hybrid from a BCM and local birds from France, bred to make a high performance lay that is hardy.

Hendrix breeds several varieties of hybrid birds including a blue egg layer called Azure Blue I had 3 of these 2 remain - lovely friendly funny birds - my favourite (Twister) passed away this past summer, I almost lost her sister Flopsy last month - for some reason I have been having crop stasis issues, at one point I was worried about Mareks. But I was aggressive with treating Flopsy (and the 3rd one Topsy - ya original names), but still it was touch and go. I don't think the Azure are particularly hardy. They are a Leghorn x Aracuna, look like a leghorn but lay blue eggs.

Hendrix also has green egg layers, and other typical white and brown egg layers - all bred to be hardy and lay lots of eggs.

The only reason I got the Noirans was due to my very naughty Silkie mother daughter duo which would not stop being broody - I had to hunt around for some chicks to give them to stop their being broody. It was hilarious when the chicks were about 8 weeks old and bigger than their mamas

Got 2 but I don't know where the duck laid hers and I think the other girls are laying in a hiding spots. I'm up to 4
