How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Are your hens older layers? You always get a great amount of eggs! What are you feeding them...lol...? Nevertheless,

Technically, the first six of our flock of nineteen are hens in they just went over the one year mark this month. The remaining thirteen pullets are all under a year old. They are all Gold Comets and they started laying right at 22 weeks. We got them in three groups over several months and they were 18 weeks old. As far as what we're doing, well we give them a dry, safe place to live, layer pellets, fresh water, and cracked corn on the side. During the winter blast we had for the two weeks following Christmas we gave them a mash twice a day of powdered milk (1/2 cup) , sugar (1/4 cup), table scraps such as beans or rice, very warm water, and a scoop of their pellets all mixed up and poured out into a large saucer in the run. It makes about a 1/2 gallon and they went at it like they'd never eaten before. I figured it gave them a little extra body heat to get through the cold days and nights we were having then. I since was told we should not give them the powdered milk since they don't digest it very well. I never saw anything unusual during that time but I won't be using it in the future when we feed them that again. I don't know if it had anything to do with it but our Gals layed and layed. We've gotten well over 420 eggs since Jan 1st when we started keeping a log. We've been averaging 18 eggs a day each and every day since Nov 1st. My honest opinion: I think it's the breed of chickens we have, a lotta luck, and a little work on our part. We have some happy chickens and they work hard for us.

ps: Before I forget to mention it, check with MxPres. He also has 19 GC's and he's been getting the same results.

I don,t think its anything I do any different from everyone else,Its just the hybrid gold comets doing what they do best.and steady food and fresh water and a warm dry coop goes a long way in having happy healthy hens,,

I must have some very happy chickens. Over the last several days I have got 6 eggs per day from 7 hens. My for sale sign is officially out!

She probably didnt' miss a day. I have an INCREDIBLE RIR layer who missed 2 days out of 95 days!!!! She is now slowing down since the cold weather and is only giving me 4 eggs a week. I don't scold her, though, because she did such a great job!!! :) (wish the others would take her cue)
