I was just gonna try that after squeezing the eggs out!Did you sing her the song you give me fever? Duckling fever. @Jpat
I'm so jealous of all this "getting eggs" talk. Buried in snow here and will be for months yet. This is my first spring with ducks, Muscovys, 3 drakes and 5 hens. Can someone tell me what kinds of spring conditions are needed before I can expect anything?
maybe that’s it my younger stated laying in the most frigid temps we have had this year. I was surprised. Do all you ducks get along good now?
When mine started laying we were only getting about 8 hours of daylight. I was kind of surprised. 4 are new layers the the other was a mama who was starting to lay after raising ducklings.I live in Vermont at a high-ish elevation. Last spring, my two Muscovy hens started laying for the first time at the very end of March and the beginning of April. They were just about ten months old at that time. My Rouen started some time in late April, but she has major issues laying and is a bit older. The year before, she started at the end of March. I do not use artificial light. Last year was far more brutal than this winter has been (so far). I know that the amount of daylight is most important, but I’ll be interested to see if they will lay sooner due to the milder (so far) winter. As far as conditions go, there was still snow on the ground last year when they started laying, and it was still pretty darn cold.
All my hens quit laying back in November until 3 weeks ago one of my Salmon Faverolle started back laying I have 4 they will be 3 this May. Last week one of my Cochin bantams started back laying,I have 14 hens 2 Roos. My hens range from less than 1 yr up to 8 yrs.I don't have any ducks.
But I have just started getting some chicken eggs last week. I collected 4 eggs today and 5 eggs yesterday. I have 6 older girls. They are going to be 4yrs old. And I have 8 younger girls. They are almost 2 years old. I have seen a few of the younger girls and one of the older girls in the nest boxes. So far all the ones I have witnessed in the boxes are Americana or easter egger mixes. (from a barnyard hatch)
I would love to hear from other chicken owners which breeds have been laying over the winter, or which ones are the earliest to start laying.
@DukesDucks where are you located. My Muscovy start laying around 9 months of age. I expect to see eggs from them late March they are old ladies now 12 yr old doesn’t lay any longer 2-8 yr old and 1-7 yr old these 3 laid last yr. one drake 8 yrs old.I'm so jealous of all this "getting eggs" talk. Buried in snow here and will be for months yet. This is my first spring with ducks, Muscovys, 3 drakes and 5 hens.
