I have 8 RIRs who give me 6 to 8 eggs a day. That's a whole lot more than my DH & I can eat. I've been giving away dozens & dozens of eggs - the local fire station usually get 4 to 5 dozen once a month. I finally decided to post an ad on craigslist, mostly in hope of getting someone who'll but a dozen or 2 every week. I really only wanted to cover their food & snack costs.
Well a caterer called me & said he'll take all the extra eggs I have every week. She has the same arrangement with a couple of other yard chicken owners, and only uses yard eggs in her cooking. She'll come by once a week & bring eggs cartons!! At 2.25 a dozen, it's not a great price, but I'll never have to worry about any extra eggs again. I'll probably be able to sell at least 2 dozen per week, maybe even 3. At that rate, it'll cover the cost of chicken feed & treats. I'm happy.
5 dozen to the same customer. A friend just called and wants a dozen a week. To many orders not enough eggs. I feel a dose of chicken math coming on. Got to get my newbies up and running. 10 layers and dont have any in my own fridge, whats wrong with that picture?
I can't waite till my chicken starts to lay again.. and then when the baby's are old enough.
I plan to keep 3 mabey 4 of the hens chicks. not sure if one will be a roo yet.. most likely not. Once the chicks are older I will get a roo
and let nature take its course with some. and collect eggs from others.
