Mine have been disappointing. I have two Buff Orpington's who are a year old and they only give me about 4 eggs per week combined. The eggs are quite small (averaging 53 grams) and for several weeks one consistently put up soft shelled eggs, whilst the other took 10 weeks off laying for no apparent reason. This is despite having a properly formulated layer pellet and additional calcium freely available.
They are beautiful birds, don't get me wrong. I used one to sit on a nest of eggs for me and she was a wonderful Momma. They are also gorgeous to look at, have lovely personalities and don't mind being loved on. They are noisy however, with mine being much like little old ladies - complaining all the time, and not quietly either!
In contrast, I have some Rhode Island Red Hens of the same age who put up 6 to 7 eggs per week each. They too have hatched chicks for me (great Mommas) and their eggs are larger, averaging 75 grams each They are less lovey but also much less upkeep - really stoic, solid layers. When the time came to add more birds, I added RIR's without hesitation.
