@ 25 birds. my brake even cost for the CX birds was 2.00 a pound (avg) not including costs for processing equipment. that was just cost to raise them.
so based on store bought chicken, your behind the ball by about a dollar a pound if your looking for how to feed the family the cheepest. (discussion of organic, low sodium bla bla bla aside)
as for how many are worth it... that depends.
if you have a source for birds that doesnt include buying chicks and having them shipped then you can afford to easly do 3-5 at a time hand pluck.
but if your looking to have chicks shipped to you your really limited to a min order of 25 which means your going to need a full processing setup with plucker etc.
