It opened bottles on the round end an opens cans of liquid on the pointed end. Beer an coke cans back in the day before the pull tab. Canned milk, tomato juice an other stuff now. We open our home canned foods with the round end to.
 
One of my wife's co-workers let her fu-fu dog lick her plates until she went horse back riding with my wife and the first thing her fu-fu dog did was to eat a horse tur....
well you know what I mean.

As far as dogs licking plates, my mom was a clean freak yet I grew up being told that a dog's mouth was cleaner than antiseptic and had healing properties, which I thought was so cool. So as a young kid I couldn't understand why my mom was horrified when she finally discovered that me and my favorite neighborhood curs had been sharing my lollypops and ice cream cones for ages.

Even though over time I (pretty much) quit letting dogs lick kitchenware of any kind, sometimes I slip.
