How many of you make a profit from your chickens? How?

We do not sell our eggs as organic, but Cage free yard bird eggs. Not sure we are what would be called free range as they only have access to 5 acres if out of the fence or 1.5 fenced. We are in AZ so no heat bill which saves allot of money.

35 to 40 birds is normal for our 2 flocks and we do make some extra $$ at years end all the eggs and chicken we desire because we also hatch chicks to sell and keep some of the roos for 24 weeks or so then off to freezer camp.

But we don't figure in labor cause for some reason it is enjoyable as all get out

[[[........a pair of silkies go for hundreds of dollars! There has to be a profit there!.......]]]]]

Probably not.

In order to get that kind of money, the breeder has put generations of work into improving his flock. The breeder has gone to many shows and won, in order to establish reputation. The breeder has paid big money for breeding stock.

If I go to a show, it costs me a couple hundred dollars: gas to get there, meals, a motel room. I'd have to sell a lot of chicks to pay the expenses of showing. Then there are people from all over the USA going to the big Nationals in Ohio. They aren't getting away with just a couple hundred dollars to do that.

But I can't stay home because I can't sell the expensive chicks unless I am at a lot of shows and winning. You can't get several hundred dollars for a pair of Silkies unless your line of birds is well known and admired. They actually have to be worth several hundred dollars, or nobody will pay that much for them.

i sell chicks to make my money for the feed and + some if i want to buy some more egg lays or just extra cash as my husband says this is my job

i stay home and tend to my chickens so that i know they r all healthy and happy when i sell them so i wont lose costumers. i mostly hatch pure breeds so when i sell chicks i can sell them for more if they r mixed i just sell them for a $1 today just made $10 from selling a rooster and some chicks so that covers my feed
