How many of you use plans to build a coop???

The thing for me is that I never looked at any plan, because I know I don't like to follow instructions

I think it kind of lazy dude.

I started with plans that I drew up myself but they were definitely modified going through the building process. Sometimes one has an "ah-ha" moment even AFTER the fact!!

I have to make a plan. But its in my nature. Now the real trick for me is to stick to the plan and not change things. However, on my coop I just did, I did make the nest box about 3" taller than was in my plan. Other than that, everything was "as designed" and I had to keep telling myself, "Stick to the plan and don't change it. Wait to see how it turns out first."

Unless you own a lumber yard or have tons of scrap wood laying around having a plan will give you an idea of how much wood and what size boards you will need.

I did not buy or download plans, but I did spend a lot of time looking at the coop pages here on BYC before starting. I then sat down with paper and pencil to make a crude sketch of what I wanted the coop to look like. Once I did that I had a good idea of how to frame the walls. Plans or no, I can't set a right angle to save my life and this has meant that I need to make a few interesting cuts for the siding and the sheeting for the roof. Nothing impossible to deal with, but a mild pain nonetheless. I'd probably be in the same situation with detailed plans in hand. It has been very helpful to have someone else working with me, to share the head-scratching experience.

I scribbled a few notes on a piece of paper about 15 minutes before i started building. I had a basic concept in my head but, basically just started building.
