My ducklings have discovered the joy of peas.

Today I needed to get them to follow me back to the house so I bribed them with peas. Can they get a pea overload? Is there anything in peas that should make me use them with caution? We haven't cuddled this group much so I need to resort to bribery to get them where I want them.

No idea but I'm curious. I have 1 Pekin and 7 mallards, I dump half a bag worth in their pool and let them go at it.

Okay, I'll ask. I've been embarrassed to do so before now. Regarding peas...what type? Frozen? Canned? If frozen, they should be unthawed, right? Are you supposed to squeeze them out of their casings? Can I give them to babies (so long as they have grit)?

I normally give thawed frozen peas. I have dumped frozen in their pool but it was pretty warm out so they thawed pretty fast. Oh and I have never taken the pea out of the caseing for the ducks, but I have for the chicks.

Our 10 ducks get about 3-4 pounds of frozen peas daily with two heaping tablespoons of nutritional yeast sprinkled on top. i buy the frozen peas and thaw them. Canned peas can have added salt and sugar, which isn't good for your ducks. Not sure if ducks can get a pea overload. i'm sure if you asked them, they would say "no".

I give about a pound of peas when I give them, which is several times a week. We have nine runners and two buffs.

I use frozen, and thaw them out in winter with warm water. Sometimes I can only get the kind that has a little salt added, in which case I rinse three times before offering them. No problems apparent. But these days I found a different big chain supermarket and their store brand has unsalted peas, for less money.

I started giving peas when the ducklings were a week or two old, after giving them a little grit every day.

Ducklings can o.d. on peas. They will eat and eat and then literally spill peas out their mouths. yeesh. So I would not give ducklings their peas free choice! I'd guess a tablespoon for 2 week old ducklings, more as they grow.

Thanks everyone, dont tell my ducklings but they are apparently being cheated in the pea department. I have only been giving the 5 of them maybe a cup and a half a few days a week. I buy them frozen and fill a small rubbermaid container every night for the fridge to be used the next day. I feel more comfortable bribing them now.

Well, i think the big question is are they, um, wildpeas, or not?

My wild peas dont seem to make anything except flowers that dont smell. I have been thinking about planting some pea vines(?) bushes(?) in my garden just for the ducks though. Some sweetpeas for my house.
