How many people first got chickens from 2020-now?

Hey everyone! So both out of curiosity, and because it could potentially help me with a school project, I'd like to know how many people have gotten chickens for the first time from 2020 - now? This may be due to the pandemic, lifestyle changes, etc.

I want to know:
- Did you get chickens for the first time from 2020-present?
- Do you personally know someone who did? If so, how many households?
- If you're from the US, what state are you from?
- If you answered yes to the question, "Do you personally know someone who got chickens for the first time from 2020-present?" what state(s) are they from (if in the US)?

I've created a google form and if you wouldn't mind filling it out, whether you've had chickens for most of your life, or just got them, that would be great! I'd like to get a rough idea of the percentage increase in households owning chickens from 2020 to present. The form is anonymous. Thank you!

I completed the survey.

I had chickens pre-2020, but took in many COVID flocks in 2021 of people going back to work who didn't want the chickens they got in 2020 anymore. I'm sure there are many more that did work out and kept their chickens, but these are the ones I know. One little flock I took in was quite old... someone who kept chickens pre-covid and then decided not to anymore.

Thanks for completing it! I suspected that would happen, same thing happens around Easter each year too. People think it’s a great idea to get chickens on a whim without understanding what goes into them and then get rid of them when it doesn’t work out.

Yes - I have a chicken farm friend who has been loving those people. They feel like tons of people started chicks for them and then bring them young chickens that they didn't have to raise. They took in many more chickens than I did before I got NPIP tested and are still taking them in. Rough estimate I would say they've taken in several hundred chickens and ducks since 2020.
