Hi all

ok i have been doing a lot of reading on this site and i was able to get the average amount of square feet one chicken needs 4 ft. I just asked my mom how many square feet our coop is and she just gave me a blank stare. I think it must be the same look i give her

she is right! she did look at me like i had lobsters crawling out of my ears!!!! her fovorite thing to say to me right now!

I want standard size hens but i do not want them stuffed into an area that would be to small for them. So here is my coop size i just went out and measured it. the house area is 5'9" x 4'3" and the attached run is 10'3" x 5'9". Sorry i just am not sure how to figure this out and school so far has not taught this yet

I am just thrilled our new house we just moved into has a pre-built chicken coop!! yippppeee oh and thank you to anyone who helps me out on this!

if your inside space is 5'9" by 4'3" you multiply the two together to get your square footage. so you'd say 5 feet and 9/12 which is 3/4 right? so 5.75 feet times 4 feet and 3/12 which is 1/4 which is 4.25 feet. so your square footage inside is 24.44 approximately. make sense?

btw, the square footage question was one of the ones they had on "Are you smarter than a 5th grader" a few weeks ago.

i don't watch that show but someone at my office was surprised the person on the show missed it.

To get the square footage of anything you need to multiply the length by the width... which would be

5'9 x 4'3 = 22'3" square footage

10'3" x 5'9" = 52'3" square footage.

Hope this helps

YES!!! that does make sense! Thank you for helping me out on this. I thought i had figured it out right i just wanted to make sure though! My mom is an English Major math is not her strong point. That is funny a square footage question was on Are you smater the a fifth grader. I never learned anything about square footage in fifth grade. Thank you again so much for your help now i am going to go chicken shopping!!

ok now i have another question. sorry
hmm.png
I just got an email saying that i can only have six chickens
copied is the text of the email

5.9x4.3= 25.37

25.37 divide 4 (your square feet per chicken) is 6.34

so you have 6 chickens

That square footage is just the house size. Can i not combine both house square footage and run square footage together for the total amount of hens i can get? I was hoping to get at least ten hens.....

ok!! posted then saw broncbusters post.

They will have access to the run 24/7. The run area is fully roofed shingles and all, and they used these things they called flight pannels for the run walls. The old owners of the house use to raise parrots so the wire panels they used were from some of the huge parrot runs they had here. The walls are super stong my idiot brother was hauling acrossed the yard the other day on his quad and hit the chicken coop the walls are not even bent!! It does not get to cold here where i live either. They also will be out most of the day we have a 1/2 acre of land for them to run around on.
