I'm so bad at these puzzles. I'm always like "the answer is 12" and the correct answer is like 58.

And here's how I counted:

First I counted the littlest squares, and there are 8 of those.

Then the next biggest size and there are 18 (4 rows of 4, plus the two in the middle).

The next biggest size is made of 4 of the second smallest squares, and if you think about it, there are three of those in each row. (columns 1 & 2, columns 2&3, columns 3&4). I think there are 10 of those (9 going across rows, then one in the very middle).

The next biggest size is a 3x3, and I think you can make four of those.

Finally, the whole thing is a big square, for a total of 41.
