I have been asking myself that very question. I have several tomato varieties in my elevated beds (in a side yard, out of sight of the birds, who have only lived in the back yard in their coop, the run underneath, and now in their shady run under the birch trees. Every day that I look I see too many tomatoes! (I've had an injury and haven't paid much attention to the gardens.) The cherry tomato variety called "Super-sweet 100" literally produces 100 about every other day. I also ordered a special variety that is supposed to grow so big that you can fill a pint jar with just one tomato. The plant looked dead on arrival and I thought I threw it out, but I guess I put it in the elevated beds. Now I also have two or three of these giants every couple of days. I use home made compost mixed with peat moss and perlite and I only fertilize once at planting time with a tablespoon of trifecta and a teaspoon of mycorrhizal fungi. when the crops are done I add minerals greensand and azomite before the next planting time. of course, this is SoCal, supposedly mild seasons, but we are having an extra hot summer. I do have some big shade trees, not near the tomatoes but they do throw some shad their way part of the time. the 4 six week old chicks are eating more tomatoes that the family, about one a day. Once I threw on in and forgot to take off the green end, so I tried to grab it back to take it out, and the birds attacked me! They too, as others have said seem to be flourishing and eat plenty or starter/grower crumbles. Now they are trying to jump up and pick the birch leaves off the European White Birch that shades their yard. Should I allow this? I have protected the trunk, but I could prune the lower branches out of reach? I left them because I figured they need all the shade they can get.
