If the dog crate is in a large covered run for adult chickens and their fence is with small sized openings it might not be a problem. If the chicks are 6 weeks old and can get back easily trough the dog crate fence they will return when pecked and probably be safe there. The possibility to go outside the chicken run was a real hazard for one of the chicks I had. The fluff makes the chicks look bigger as their bodies really are.
But for the first 2 weeks I suppose its safer to get used to each other withouth the trespassing. I would use fine hwc 50 cm (2’) wide for birds to fold around. You don’t need to cut that.
