how many years

Hens are kept for maximum production for thier first year of life. Some hens will still pop out lots of eggs when they are several years old and some will slow down after 2-3 years of steady laying. It really all depends on the hen.

Most chickens lay the majority of their eggs in the first few years, but they can live much longer than than and continue to pop out an occasional egg.

Depends on the breed. Many of the fast egg laying breeds burn out quickly while some other breeds may have hens laying well as old as 3+ years.

I have a hen who still lay regularly and she's 6 years old. I did hear some chicken still lay aged 10 years and more. Those are exceptional, though.
