You need 1 square foot per bird.

So to elaborate, each trio would need a cage approximately 1'x3' or 1 1/2' x 1 1/2'. However, it is better to have at least 3 females per male, so you really only need one of yours. Unless you want to have 2 males for diversity. You can always get more

I didn't elaborate more, Shelley, because I'm unsure if it's advisable to keep 2 trios in the same pen? Maybe you can help with that question? I'm curious for my own birds.

i would like to keep two trios in one pen so that i get better fertelaty but i could just have more cages.

i'm not just going to have two trios.

i have a big pen that i'll use it is 70cm (27 1/2 inch) X 180cm (71 inch).

but that pen will be for my growers.

i could just make more cages.

i'm going to breed two types that small jap and the big jap.

i'm going to breed them to sell the eggs and birds.

so will have 10 to 20 trios of the large ones and 10 to 20 trios of the small ones.

Instead of a trio of 1 male 2 females, you'd want to think in harems of 1 male to 5 females. My groups of 6 have a 2x3 X1 ft stacked cage for each group. Males who aren't kept for breeding go to a 3X7 ft pen for grow out, then get butchered.

So 30cmsq per bird x 30 cm height per cage. You'd want 1 meter by 60 cm for a group of 6, again keeping 30 cm tall. Does that help?
