1 25# bag of chick starter...$12 here divided by 2 - $6.00

Chicky Tocks ,My that is high eating on the hog! Did you mean 25 pounds or 50 pounds ? We pay $11.00 for a 50 pound bag of chick starter here in Texas!
10 cubit foot of pine shavings is $7.50

Thepremo I would check on how much your feed is going to cost you. Maybe he would be willing to buy your feed for your chicks and his the first month. . Also pay for his 4 chicks. That to me would be a good deal! I know I would have no problem with that, taking care of baby chicks is work! I would also tell him that there is no guarantee that the baby chicks he bought might die for sometimes that just happens no matter how good you take care of them, but that you will do your best.

Just read this breakdown yesturday,

Cost Analysis re; Heritage Layers

One of our more serious producers of point of lay Heritage chickens (who was a number cruncher in a former life) did a cost analysis of a batch of pullets he produced last year.::::::::: These are his numbers:::::::::::

24 Dozen Eggs (288 eggs) @ $15.00 per dozen plus air cargo shipping
From University of Alberta

Mileage to pick up at Comox BC Canada 102 kilometers @ .54 per k
414.00+
55.08 =
469.08

Assuming hatch/fertility rate of 90% results in 259 live chicks
$1.81 per chick
Not including incubation costs

Feed 259 chicks @ $.15 per day for 6 weeks, then cull 50% roosters

Results in 130 pullets.
791.00
1260.78
Cost per pullet to 6 weeks ......$9.69

Feed 130 chicks for 20 more weeks
+ 2800.00
= 4060.78

$4060.78 divided by 130 = $31.23 per point of lay pullet

Did you get that bottom line? - That is cost $31.23 to raise a Heritage hen to 26 weeks! Are you still selling yours for $20.00? An old line often used in Alberta - “If I won a million $$ in the lottery I would just keep on farming until it was all gone”.

i would not charge over 5.00 for a month old standard chick, you are going to have to have heat, food, and pine shavings and 4 chicks are not going to increase your cost, if it is a neighbor i would not take advantage of him, you may need a favor later on....i give all my eggs away to neighbors and the elderly, because it brings me great pleasure...there is so much more to life than money and your fairness will be rewarded triple fold. just my opinion as a 65 year old retired nurse.

I paid $5 each last time I bought year-old laying hens of feedstore/hatchery origins. I wouldn't pay $5+ for a month old chick unless it was something really fancy.
