How much are you paying for layer pellets?

Yolo County, CA:

$6.99 for 50# Scratch
$9.99 for 50# Pellets

I am hoping the hens will like the scratch. Much more economical.

Is there any disadvantage to Scratch?

South Central Alaska

$17 for 80 pounds of local Barley with Kodiak fishmeal for 16% protein.
$26 for 50 pounds of crushed oyster shell for extra calcium in winter.

During winter, we also feed rehydrated alfalfa pellets and BOSS.
can't remember what those cost though.....
Even though our chickens cannot free range in winter, our eggs remain a very dark orange with the above food!

YES!

Scratch is a TREAT not a complete feed. Overfeeding scratch can lead to serious nutritional deficiencies!

Give them their feed free choice all the time, keep the feeders full, but just toss out a cup of scratch in the yard once a day for treats.

If you have very few chickens, a whole cup might even be a lot. I was feeding 1/2 cup to five birds, but I feed a drinking cup (probably 12 oz) full to 13 birds.
