How much did your coop cost?

HaHa DH couldn't either, but now he's the one that wants to put the sloped roof on it so I don't have to shovel snow off the top of "his" pen.

8x8x8 Henhouse: $4,750
Includes concrete slab, electricity, built-in cupboard, gravity water tank and drinker, Raised roost with litter box, heat lamp, dual pane windows (same price as single-pane), 28 lb feeder, 3-nest big-bird nest box, automatic door opener, and shuttered exhaust fan....oh, and curtains, mirror just for cuteness, and deep litter.

Run: $1,000
10x40x7' wood frame with 1/2" welded wire buried 18" in the ground, a gate on each end of the run, corrugated metal roof, outdoor gravity water tank and drinker, sand fill, shade cloth, and flower planter...oh and doo-dads for the girls to play on.

What did I do to make it cheaper? Nothing, I'm not a carpenter. I had to have everything done for me. I did draw up the plans myself and accompanied the contractor for purchases.

I live in the city, so I had to make it aesthetically pleasing so there would be no upset neighbors. Would I do anything different? Yes, bigger is always better! Do I appreciate my ladies? You bet! And 9 eggs a day from 9 hens is pretty awesome!

It will come out a lot different depending on whether your approach is to look at photos and sit down and draw exactly what your imagination comes up with, and then go shopping at Home Depot; or whether your approach is to spend a few weeks or months or years vigorously scrounging up supplies, and then take a look at it all and say "ok what can I build with this, maybe having to buy a few more bits to make it all come together".

Of course if you have existing structures that can be adapted to chickens, the cost can be somewhere between 'low' and 'free'

Even just using an existing wall or fence as one side of your setup can cut costs noticeably.

(e.t.a - I say this as someone capable of the whole range of approaches

-- the chickens are house, basically at no cost, in a converted dog breeding/boarding kennel building; I recently knocked together an 8x8x4' tractor for less than $20; my original tractor cost probably $350 or so; and due to Wanting To Use The Roofing Material I Wanted To Use, the sussexes' two roofed runs [the 5x14 one that I built last winter, and the 10x10 adjacent one I just started now] will come out at something close to $1000 for the pair.)

I started with a 6x8 building we already had. Added a covered run and scrounged some of the materials..... about 400 bucks. Then the fever took over and i got more chicks. Added a 6x12 addition with run. 700 more but i quit keeping track before i was completely done. Feeling the fever again so i'll probably be building more next year. I figure if i can sell some eggs and eat a bunch of eggs i will break even about the time i die. LOL

Shelley - you've seen my coops - don't even ask what the top coop cost

the bottom coop is a lot bigger than you're planning, but the basic materials weren't so much. The runs for the bottom coops cost as much as the coop did, though, because hubby (being one you ridiculous Virgos) had to go overkill on the framing.

I'd have to ask him about what the total was for it - I just help build and hand over the debit card - I didn't keep track (didn't dare

So far? about $1,900.

We're not done yet either (and we bought a pre-made coop).

I wanted this coop because it matches my main house exterior perfectly.

I am already planning on expanding the run maybe in the next 2 years. I may also close in the area in front of the coop and the side where the door is, so they can come up on my back deck/porch and sorta free range there a little bit. My enclosed dog yard is behind the coop and the runway to get to the dog yard from the back porch/deck is the red fencing on the side.

my little 4 x 6 coop cost me a few dollars more than i expected.
I rebuilt an existing fence - it would have happened one day - the chickn yard just pushed that day forward.

100+ feet of new 6 foot fencing
4 x 6 coop
4 x 8 run

total cost ~ about $3000.00 give or take a couple hundred.
I have not added up all the receipts and I do have them. I must admit - I am little scared to find out what I really spent. I figure I have at least $1800 into the fencing. Maybe more. The coop has been an ongoing project since April.

Now understand this - I have a second coop I built while working on their coop. I have less than $10 in it. all scraps from other projects. I just needed a couple hinges and latches.

so it depends on what you want and how pretty you need it to be.
