How much do they eat

Yogurt is dead easy!  I bought my last carton quite a while back.  I make it from dried skim milk which helps reduce the cost.  Just warm a quart of milk to about 100 to 110 degrees F, stir in a tablespoon or so of live culture yogurt and incubate at 100 to 110 degrees for 2 to 12 hours.  The longer it incubates, the more tart it gets.  I usually do about 6 or 7 hour.  I wrap a pot of hot water in a towel and put it and the jar of fresh mixed milk/yogurt in a plastic cooler and just leave it be.  When I take it out...it's yogurt!  When that jar is getting low, I repeat the procedure using a tablespoon of the last batch to start the next.  I give it to the girls as is, and for us, we use it for smoothies or I add fruit and a little honey or whatever :)  The homemade stuff does separate, with the liquid coming to the top...it can either be drained (I use a coffee filter in a strainer) for a thicker yogurt, or simply stirred up for a runnier version.

Our girls love yogurt!  I learned the first time I gave it to them to put down the dish and step away quickly...the stuff flies everywhere!  LOL, it's a hoot to watch them.
Wow! That's awesome :D I will definitely have to try that.

So live culture yoghurt.. Just regular store bought yoghurt you mean? Not anything special? That sounds too good to be true lol.

I am going to try it out this weekend :)

Yep, nothing special at all. You do need to get some that says it's got live culture though. Lots don't...I think they may pasturize after the yogurt's made so it kills the cultures. You can just buy one of the small containers...it has more than enough in it to make a new quart. Do get the plain kind. You can use regular milk to make it as well if you prefer. I like to make mine from the skim...it has all the calcium and good stuff without all the fat. I use the powdered stuff because it's a bit less expensive and we don't always have milk on hand. I may go with a bit more butterfat during the cold months as that will help the girls caloric intake to generate more heat, but probably not...we already have cracked corn and BOSS on hand to supplement their fat intake. If necessary, I can add a tsp of canola oil to the yogurt.

I make oatmeal for them in the winter to help increase warmth. Add some yoghurt with that, and they go NUTS.

I like yoghurt with fat. Always tastes better to me :)

LOL, the second they hear the back door open they all come running...not spoiled...much!  ;)
Mine are the same way. Isn't it a wonderful sight? It is majestic with my birds. I free range over 150 of them. To see even half of them coming at me is amazing. We love showing new visitors how they do that. "Chick chick chick" is their favourite sound.

My turkey flew at the window yesterday when my friend was eating popcorn in the sunroom. He did not like her manners. We share in our house :gig
