how much do you charge for your eggs?

our neighbor sells hers for 1.25 a dozen. i know she lets them roam around her yard and the edge of the field. it is the only way i can see her being able to afford them and make a profit.
i will probably sell mine to my sister for 1.25-1.50 a doz and she will take between 2 and 3 dozen a week. has a passel of kids and has friends dropping by all the time. i just want to pay for the feed so everything i eat is free.

btw I was at the walmart and they had white eggs marked down to 1.69 a dozen. it just amazed me how cheap they are. then again when i cracked one open at home the whites just pour out of the shell.

I currently purchase them for $3 - $3.50 a dozen from a yard a few blocks away. Now I have my chicks and I will have laying hens in a few months. I plan on checking the price at my local "health food store" and selling for a bit less than that. I already have 3 co-workers who want eggs and there will likely be more. If I could figure out how to get my small flock's eggs accepted at the local farmer's market, I might try that too. As long as the sales help offset the cost of feed, then we are good.

We just raised our prices to $3.00 a dozen although I know we could get more. We were at $2.00 for 2 years but feed costs and chick costs, and of course the cost of getting the chick to laying, is too great. We still aren't making money year round. We make about $1 a day above costs in the spring when everyone is laying but we aren't in it for the money yet.

BTY, this is my first post, I am graduating from college in 4 weeks, and I am working on figuring out how to turn my family hobby farm into an LLC so we can have some limited liability, get our egg handlers license and possibly get into a co-op or just sell at a premium for farmer's markets. We get about 30 dozen a week right now, not quite enough to really sell at the FMs yet. Here's hoping it's all up and running for next year.

I live in Davsion Michigan. I have no trouble getting rid of all my eggs and truth be told could sell twice as many if I had them. I charge $2.00 for mediums, $2.50 for large and $3.00 for extra large. People don't seem to mind paying a premium for farm fresh, non cage, unmedicated eggs.

Four Partridge Rocks, three Barred Rocks, two New Hampshires, four Black Australorps, two Buff Orpthingtons, three Speckle Sussex, one Silver Penciled Wyandotte and four turkeys:eek:

Glad to see this thread. I just raised my prices to $4.00 a dozen as my layer feed increased 30%. I was charging 3.25. I only have a few customers and a small flock. I wanted to see if I could make enough $$ to pay for the feed, scratch, shavings, straw and anything else chicken related. Not there yet....but the $20 to $24 a week helps.

I live in No Ca and one of my customers told me that a bit south of me, in Marin County, fresh farm eggs were selling for $12. a dozen at the farmers market.

I recently hosted a "customer appreciation day" inviting my few customers for breakfast (I served quiche from the eggs of course) because they wanted to meet "the girls" and see where they live. I guess I talk a lot about them.....we had a great time and the rise in prices (week after the breakfast) didn't seem to faze anyone. Everyone is paying more for everything that's for sure.
