How much do you guys charge for eggs?

The people down the road from us sell their eggs for $2.25 a dozen. Friends of mine asked me how much I would charge them for my eggs, I said I don't know, why don't you go buy them from the neighbors, bring them to my house (so I can check them out) and then I'll let you know....

I know quite a few people that don't wash theirs off. I don't think it lends towards how clean your conditions are. My boxes will be freshly cleaned and lo and behold a hen will go in and lay an egg and crap on it too!!! But I can see how people would misconstrue it if they weren't familiar with chickens. I always wash mine off and use a brillo pad if anything is really stuck on bad. I don't use soap because eggs are porous and I am always afraid they will end up tasting like soap!!

I get ones with poop on them all the time also, one of the "new girls" is making a mess out there. I know it doesnt matter how clean the nest is. But to not wash the poop off before you sell them to people to eat........

And I wouldnt think that soap would absorb too quickly into the egg. It is only on there for a few seconds. None of mine ever taste like soap. And if you think about it, they would taste like poop if they did absorb that much, because the poop is on there much longer than the soap.

I never thought about it that way but you're right the poop does stay on there longer!!

Or a lot confused.

I had an adult woman ask me if pullets turn into roosters. At first I thought she was confused about which language to use. After talking with her, she really meant what she asked -- she wasn't talking about the reproductive issues that can uncommonly result in the hen becoming a roo, she was talking about just randomly occurring sex change without a cause. She thought this was normal.

Ok that confused me? She wanted to know if a chicken just randomly changed sexes? I have had hens or what I swore were hens that seemingly overnight became roosters but I am thinking that all the right parts were there before and he was just a little late coming out of the closet!!!

I started out just giving extras away when they were young and producing like crazy. As the requests grew (and the supply dwindled) folks offered to pay and we hit upon $2/doz just to help pay feed and other costs. I've thought about raising to $2.50 or $3.00 but haven't yet. As I work in the education system I thought raising as of next fall would be a good plan. Especially since the new gals should be producing by then~ Not in this for profit, just hoping to break even on my expenses.

I always rinse/scrub my eggs with plain water. Can't personally handle handling them with poo all over them.

I have one customer who pays $3/doz and one customer who pays $2.50/doz (because they are not fed organic pellets). I let my customers choose what they wanted to pay. The $ from egg sales just goes to buying pellets.

Students in my school ask me this all the time; utterly astonished that you don't need a roo for egg production. I usually end up referring them to their health teacher to get their questions answered. I work in a very public office setting.
