How much do your Peas eat?

That is what I was wondering about the peas. Do they have specific tastes?
I wondered just how easy it it was to get them to try something new.

When I purchase new birds they always take right to the feeds here but when I sell to others I try to remember to send a zip lock bag of grain with them. Mine do not take to pellets or crumbles very well. The peas have not taken to eating the same grains that my chickens do but they have always eaten the same layer mash so that is good. I just feel they need more than what that offers.

My peas are definitely picky eaters and seem to like only the most expensive seeds and feeds. They love safflower and small BOSS, two of the most expensive seeds at the local feed store. They won't eat any type of pellet, including pigeon pellets, they hate purine crumbles, but love 27% turkey starter.

Of course they eat the expensive seeds first and won't eat the two types of pellets. That 75 pound bag costs $27!

I can get and often do get a bag of the 5 grain scratch that has a lot of goodies in it. There is another brand made by Southern States called Rockin Rooster that I feed sometimes, too. The peas have not eaten much from those yet but I keep it offered so they get used to it. I think it will be a long time for them to get used to new foods but I like to offer it for healthier birds.

Mine really seem to like fresh, leafy alfalfa.

Some of my peas like fruit and others don't. My peacock Alto goes crazy for tomatoes.

I always like to offer in season fruits and veggies to my other poultry. I will continue to offer to the peas as the year goes on. I like to find what they like best but always like to offer other things, too.

I buy a lot of my feed from a mill. I can get Gamebird starter, grower/finisher, and gamebird crumbles for adults or something. For a 50lb bag o gamebird grower it was $18.00 something. Which isn't too bad, considering what I'd pay if I bought it from a feedstore, ouch! I'm wanting to test the Fermented Feed on the peas, and see how they like it. Currently I make a warm mash out of their gamebird crumbles and add cinnamon/nutmeg for breakfast, and then brewers yeast, cayenne pepper, sometimes cod liver oil, Apple Cider vinegar, and other things. They adorable scrambled/boiled eggs, that is by far their favorite treat.

I've mixed barely, whole oats, and wheat into their feed before, they ate it but I think they prefer just the crumbles. I've noticed mine do not waste much or any feed if I make a warm mash with it, plus they are getting hydrated at the same time.

I will try some of this on mine. I already hard boil a lot of eggs to feed back so maybe they will learn to like that as well.

I have been pulling up grass lately and putting it in their pens when I go over to check and feed them. It is always gone by the next time I visit so I think they are eating it. Maybe since spring is around the corner they are craving the grass? They do not seem to care for the clover though. Could be where it is growing isn't making it tasty enough.

My peas also love it when I put warm water in their crumbles.
