Can't agree more. I see it in my work all the time. Controlled studies are great to compare to other controlled studies, but the real world has so many other variables that it's hard to make solid judgments.
I've been tracking our progress so I can make educated guesses in the future based on what we do - and hopefully find ways to reduce time/costs.
But if I understood the original question right, in planning your costs vs. expected sale price you have to start somewhere.
