How much does egglaying decrease in the winter???

I have 8 hens that are capable of laying. they were giving me 4-6 a day thru the fall (I just acquired my full grown flock Labor Day) and then it went to 0-1 a day, very discouraging since my coop cost about $3,000 in materials, my brother built it (he's a gol durn perfectionist) and didn't want to use the materials I had scrounged from freecycle. Oh nooooo! We had to go to Home Depot about 8 or 10 times. and if I said "do you think this is really necessary? Well, I think you all know the answer! Egg production is picking up a bit, about 2 a day but one day I would have had 3 but they ate one and the next day I would have had 4 but they ate one! Is there a way to stop the egg eating or at least slow it down? I give them more than enough food. My husband will say, "Oh boy! cornbread!" and I say "sorry, it's for the chooks!"
