It depends on where they are going, how many eggs are in the box, what type of box you use, and how you pack them.
I've been mostly sending out quail eggs this summer, all my chickens are broody it seems. For up to 40 button quail eggs (like I ever have that many!) or up to 20 coturnix eggs it's usually $5 for shipping with free DC# through online ship and click.
I would say the average cost of shipping I've paid would be $7 or $8, but there are some that have been as much as $15, though not many.
No, it's not hard to get set up with paypal, but it can take a couple of days.
I live in the center of the country so it pretty much costs me the same no matter which direction I ship.
I came up with that figure by looking thru my Post Office reciepts so that is straight shipping and confirmation number...nothing for my packing supplies which don't come cheap.

It seems to me that shipping to someone in your area costs me about the same as it does to ship to CA or WA, so I think, for some reason, the rates are just higher in the Great Plains region

I don't know how they decide price.
Here's some examples from some of my reciepts (for 12+ eggs):
New York 12.60
Washington State 13.60
oklahoma 8.40
Maryland 14.40
Maine 13.60
georgia 11.50
it cost me 10.60 to mail 7 eggs to Washinton state last week

That's crazy. I sent 100 quail eggs to one of the carolinas (I think) and the shipping was $8
