I was wondering how much feed I need to give my chickens each day. There are 9 of them. They are free ranging. They are egg layers. So how much should I feed them? (I used to use a feeder but goats and mice kept getting into it and eating it all up so now i have to feed the chickens by hand). Thanks.

I usually use a trough feeder

and the recommended hight is 25CM about 10 inches high

that way mice cant get at it

so I just keep filling it up

this is what I use

I feed daily. And the amount of feed will vary through out the year. With harsh cold temperatures needing more feed, and in the summer, free ranging bug eating birds will need less.

Each day, when you put out feed, that night see where you are at, if there is feed left over, put out less the next day, if there is no feed, put out more.

For that number of birds, I would start with about 4 cups of commercial feed, and check it about 4:00, if it is all gone, you could give one - two cups more, and see how they eat it. If they attack it, then adjust, if they just a little, you are close to right.
