How much feed will 5 layers eat/week??

Take into a account that a breed like a buttercup will not eat near as much as a LF Orpington or Barred Rock. My cuckoo marans are just pigs. They are the first to jump on food and the last to leave.

This thread is giving me heartburn. Clearly I'm going to have to use my lunch money to buy feed so my wife doesn't catch wind of the credit card charges at the feed store!

Now, what to do with all the empty feed bags...

Whatnow?, it isn't hard to justify laying hens, IMO

. And, it isn't like we need to justify her as a cog in the food industry (Hy-line's 24-page pdf ) and whether she consumes 75 lbs. or 78 lbs. of feed during her short 60 weeks (or so) of life.

Even if she gives us one-third less the standard # of eggs for commercial layers and we only get 14 dozen eggs from our hen over a year and a couple months. And, this hen eats one-third more store-bought feed than she should have - we'd still be paying out about what they'd charge us at the supermarket for the eggs.

My hens can have lawn grass and left-overs and other good food. And, it's better that they get it than just giving these things over to the overweight, yappin', crappin' dog
