"Need" is an interesting concept. You may find that you need more than chicks will eat. They'll scratch in it and poo in it and fling it all over the place. I think I swept up and threw out at least 3 times what went in them.

Chickens don't eat "meals" they are more of a grazer/all day nibbler.

Yes.

Restricting feed to dual purpose birds can result in impacted crops from gorging when food IS present, fighting over food, malnutrition, poor growth and decreased egg production.

If they are very hungry, they would fight over food. One might try to keep the other from eating.

i just put out 3 CUPS of layer pellets in the feeder and they ATE ALL OF IT is that good or bad

okay i just went to check on them and there was probably about a cup of feed left they stopped eating and went to get water

Sounds like they are very hungry. Like 21 Hens said, they will gorge themselves because they are afraid they will not get enough food. They are old enough to start laying, but you said that they are not laying. Are you feeding them layer pellets all the time? For how long?
